Section III

Description

-Purpose: This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits small research projects to expand the application of genetic epidemiologic methods to studies of substance use disorders (SUDs/AUD, drug abuse and dependence) by applying genetic epidemiologic approaches to advance our understanding of developmental trajectories of SUD/AUD, differentiate genetic and environmental factors in the development and maintenance of SUD/AUD, broaden and refine phenotypic definitions of SUDs/AUD, guide the translation of etiologic findings to treatment, prevention, gene-finding and molecular studies, and meet the methodologic challenges of the field. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-07-413, that solicits applications under the R01 mechanism, and PA-07-414, that solicits applications under the R03 mechanism. . -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
