Description
A.Project Goals The project allows interns to gain experience in cultural resources management at Manzanar National Historic Site while contributing to the preservation and interpretation of archaeological sites and historic features. The cultural resources at Manzanar have been recognized by the U.S. Congress as a national significance, reflected in its National Landmark and National Historic Site status. Manzanars General Management Plan and subsequent planning documents call for the documentation, preservation, and restoration of the site¿s cultural resources to help educate the public, not only about the World War II mass incarceration of Japanese Americans, but also about the earlier history of Manzanar. By participating in this important work, interns will learn about preservation and conversation issues, experience working outdoors, engage with resource specialists, and serve as NPS and historic preservation ambassadors to their family, friends, and the general public. B.Project Objectives Interns will work on projects for Manzanar include: helping to organize and supervise public archaeology projects; mapping, excavation, and restoration of historic features and landscapes; analysis and processing of artifacts; assisting in the recording of oral histories; assisting in the care of historic trees; and preparing reports and interpretive brochures for future generations.
