Section III

Description

-Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits research in stuttering, a communication disorder characterized by dysfluencies in the flow of speech output. The primary objective of this FOA is to stimulate basic, clinical and translational research in the area of stuttering. The NIDCD sponsored a workshop in March 2005 to summarize the science and identify opportunities for future research. Please see: http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/funding/programs/vsl/stutteringwrkshop.asp. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-06-482, that solicits applications under the Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21)award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received
