Description

This project enlists one youth intern for 11 months to work on corrective actions identified as an “immediate” need in the recently completed Collections Management Plan for the Cumberland Island National Seashore (CUIS). The collection includes artifacts, archives, and pieces associated with the cultural and natural history of CUIS. Tasks include records management, which involves cataloguing as well as updating and organizing accession records. Recent additions to the archives collection are to be processed and organized. An environmental monitoring program will be implemented for storage and exhibit spaces. Much effort will go toward collections pieces stored on the island including photo and written documentation, condition assessments, necessary accessioning, and improving storage conditions. The intern will coordinate an effort to ensure sensitive materials are transferred to adequate mainland facilities, while more robust pieces are housed on the island. In addition, basic conservation treatments and protection measures will be performed with an eye toward making the objects stable and secure for interpretation. The intern will develop a digital feature for presentation on the CUIS website and/or social media platforms.
