Section III

Description

-Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite R01 grant applications for patient-oriented research in the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) mission areas of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language. For the purposes of this FOA, patient-oriented research is defined as diagnosis, treatment, and intervention research using individuals with a communication disorder. This announcement also seeks to address unanswered questions as delineated in the most recent revision of the NIDCD National Strategic Research Plan. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and supersedes R01 specific language in previous versions of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders NIDCD program announcement, NIDCD Patient-Oriented Research Grant . This announcement runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-06-086, that solicits applications under the NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21) award. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each R01 award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
