Objective
NIDCR extramural research provides research funds to support basic, translational, and clinical research in dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) health and disease through grants and cooperative agreements. The extramural Research Projects programs plan, develop, and manage scientific priorities through portfolio analyses and consultation with stakeholders, to facilitate the most promising discoveries and emerging technologies for rapid translation to clinical applications for improving the health of all people across their lifespan. The extramural research programs support a broad portfolio of basic, translational, and clinical research across DOC sciences. These programs encompass oral microbiology, including HIV/AIDS; head and neck cancers; orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders; dental, oral, and craniofacial mineralization and developmental anomalies. The portfolio also includes preclinical and translational research to advance precision medicine, computational and data science, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, and the development of biomaterials and devices and immunomodulatory oral science, with the goal of accelerating translation, regulatory readiness, and clinical adoption of DOC-specific innovations. In addition, NIDCR supports patient-oriented, population, and community-based research aimed at improving the DOC health across the nation. This includes biomedical and behavioral clinical trials, research on salivary gland and rheumatic diseases, DOC health and epidemiology, and studies of fundamental biological processes.
