Augustus F. Hawkins Centers of Excellence—Teacher Preparation and Development

Objective

This program focuses on the various aspects of the teacher preparation pipeline, including the recruitment, preparation, support, placement, and retention of teachers for and in high-need local education agencies (LEAs) to support underserved students.

Who Can Apply

  • State (includes District of Columbia, public institutions of higher education and hospitals)
  • Local (includes State-designated lndian Tribes, excludes institutions of higher education and hospitals
  • Public nonprofit institution/organization (includes institutions of higher education and hospitals)
  • U.S. Territories and possessions
  • Private nonprofit institution/organization (includes institutions of higher education and hospitals)

Eligible institutions (as articulated under section 241(1) of the HEA) under the Hawkins Program include—(i) An IHE that has a qualified teacher preparation program that is—(A) a part B institution (as defined in section 322 of the HEA); (B) a Hispanic-serving institution (as defined in section 502 of the HEA); (C) a Tribal College or University (as defined in section 316 of the HEA); (D) an Alaska Native-serving institution (as defined in section 317(b) of the HEA); (E) A Native Hawaiian-serving institution (as defined in section 317(b) of the HEA); (F) a Predominantly Black Institution (as defined in section 318 of the HEA); (G) an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution (as defined in section 320(b) of the HEA); or (H) a Native American-serving, nontribal institution (as defined in section 319 of the HEA); (ii) A consortium of institutions described in paragraph (i); or (iii) An institution described in paragraph (i), or a consortium described in paragraph (ii), in partnership with any other IHE, but only if the center of excellence established is located at an institution described in paragraph (i).
