Cooperative Agreements with States for Intrastate Meat and Poultry Inspection

Objective

To supply Federal assistance to states desiring to operate a meat and poultry inspection program in order to assure the consumer an adequate supply of safe, wholesome, and properly labeled meat and poultry products. The goal is to ensure consumers have a safe, wholesome, and properly labeled supply of meat and poultry products. By partnering with states, FSIS helps maintain food safety while allowing states to manage local inspection programs.

Who Can Apply

  • Department or Agency of a U.S. State Government

An appropriate State or U.S. Territory agency administering State or Territorial meat or poultry inspection programs under laws equal to the Federal Meat and Poultry Products Inspection Acts.

It serves state governments, local meat and poultry processors, and ultimately consumers within the state. By supporting state-run inspection programs, it helps small and mid-sized processors operate locally without needing federal inspection, while still ensuring food safety for the public.
