Changing climate and urban growth place stress on our global water systems and alter the means by which we receive and manage water. In the arid West and Southwest, Americans have historically relied on acequias, zanjas and canals for life-giving water. These were not agricultural oddities but, rather, part of urban development. these waterways created distinct cultural landscapes with specific material expressions of the technologies and social arrangements of water distribution. As new technologies and systems are developed, some consider these former waterways obsolete. The history and future of waterways brings forth a complex interlocking of issues: hydrology, ecology, climate, technology, law, economics and politics. Michael Hollerans research will examine their persistence as landscapes, providing a foundation of understanding for the important preservation task of managing change, considering adaptation for new uses, and more. Understanding the technical evolution and performance of the unique materials comprising Modern architecture is paramount to safeguarding these structures. Daile de verre, also known as faceted glass, is among these unique materials. Conservator Laura Buchner will research the fabrication methods, deterioration patterns and conservation techniques of dalle de verre, focusing on panels designed by the prolific French stained glass artist Gabriel Loire. Through her Fitch-funded research, Buchner will be able to effectively characterize decay mechanisms towards the goal of informing conservation decisions associated with dalle de verre, a hand-crafted material. At Giulio Romano's Palazzo Stati Maccarani (1522-1524) in Rome, Italy, Mr. Rakatansky is unlocking a new fundamental understanding of the larger Romano oeuvre, demonstrating links between the built environment and fine and decorative artworks by the Italian architect and artist. Mr. Rakatansky's visualizaition model and application has the potential to open the door to a rich understanding of complex sites from across history. Total grant amount: $15,000

The Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes (CNCT) people inhabited the Oregon coast for centuries but sadly the CNCT lost all built architecture, symbolic ties and ownership in the Seaside area due to government termination policy, racism, and disease. For over a century, the tribe has been without any land and now there isn't even a trace of a traditional home. In 2020, however, the Coastal Land Conservancy transferred 18.6 acres of salt marsh and forest back to the tribe's ownership. As a member of the Tribe, Lawson has been charged with researching the preservation of traditional building methods, design, and facilitate the creation of a new Cultural Center and longhouse.

To be applicable in the modern world, preservation must be inclusive and be a part of the solution to tackling today's toughest challenges such as climate change, housing and equity, diversity and inclusion.
