The Charlie LaBenz Youth Development Center was designed to address this need in South King County, providing a space specifically designed for teens in this region to hang out and be themselves. The Center offers games, art supplies, computers, music production equipment, and athletic equipment for teens to access on a drop-in basis. The Center also offers targeted programming; for example, a Learning Lab where high school students can access structured workshops and unstructured study assistance. Moreover, through its dedicated staff members, the Center offers safe and trustworthy adult mentors for young people who may not have positive adults elsewhere in their lives. Through programming at the Center, young people receive many opportunities to develop their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive abilities.

Year Up Puget Sound serves low-income young adults ages 18-29 through its workforce development and education program, which is comprised of six months of in-classroom training followed by a six-month internship. For the duration of the program, we offer robust wraparound supports (e.g. on-staff social workers, educational stipends, and a network of community-based providers) for students facing barriers that could impede their progress. After graduating, young adults work with Year Up staff members to secure living-wage employment and enroll in postsecondary education. Our graduates also join the National Alumni Association, a community of more than 24,000 alumni, and receive ongoing support through YUPRO (Year Up Professional Resources, PBC), our employment placement agency.

Youth are recruited from local high schools and through community partner organizations. The program is designed for youth with limited exposure to the outdoors. Programming is offered in-person at Fremont and Skyline High Schools 42 weeks during the school year, year-round at The Unity Council, and during a 2-week summer leadership development institute. LMA is unique in that it works at the intersection of culture, school, community, health and leadership. The program seeks to actualize positive outcomes not just for the individual participants, but for families, other OUSD youth and East Oakland community at large who interact with our participants.
